Getting from Los Angeles, California to Quito, Ecuador requires two flights and a layover. In our case, about 11 total hours of travel. For me, the thought of these long flights means anxiety. I get worried about having space for our carry on's (we never check) and about how uncomfortable we'll be. The result of which is often the next day of our trip being ruined by jet lag and exhaustion. Copa Airlines business class really ups the luxury and reduces your flight anxiety!
Copa Airlines offered wonderful service from LAX to Mariscal Sucre International Airport with a stop in Panama City. Business class through Copa is surprisingly affordable and well worth it. Our flights to Quito were red-eyes, but our flights back to Los Angeles were during the day. Here's our experience:
The Seats: Our flight was on a Boeing 737-800, which has 16 business class seats in a 2-2 configuration. The seat pitch (length of seat plus foot space) is 38 inches. My husband being 6'2'' had more leg room than he needed! The seats were 21 inches wide, which allowed me to curl up comfortably for sleep. The seats reclined 7.5 inches, which was comfortable, but obviously not flat. The best part of this particular seat situation was the leg and foot rest. You can't lay down, but the leg rest actually slides forward and in combination with the foot rest, you're basically in a lazy boy recliner.
Overall, the seats were very comfortable and made the flight a breeze! Overhead space is huge, fits 2 bags per person.
The Technology: In business class for Copa Airlines, the screens are tucked in the middle arm rest. While satisfactory, this was definitely my least favorite part of the airline. There were only about 40 shows/movies to choose from. I know this sounds like a lot, but genre wise, there were only about 3 things I was interested in. The screens were also a little unresponsive and slow, but overall did their job!
The Amenity Kit: The amenity kit was a nice treat. Copa Airlines is a Panamania airline, and this kit's bag was made to reflect the style of indigenous Panamanian communities. It included a comfy pair of socks, an eye mask for sleeping, hand lotion (so nice for Global Entry finger print scans!), lip balm, and the always necessary toothpaste and toothbrush. Just the right little details to stay comfortable!
The Food: I would have to say that our favorite part of this airline was the food. On all levels, on all 4 flights, I was shocked at how yummy everything was. The attendants were very very personal and after providing a glass of champagne to start, took our order for the flight.
A glass of champagne and warm, spiced nuts started the flight off amazingly. This was followed up a seriously delicious vegetable soup with so much flavor. It was smooth and perfect with warm, french bread.
The dinner consisted of a salad with your choice of dressing. The greens were fresh and it was a nice additional start to the meal. We both ordered the filet medallion with vegetables and a corn soufflé. How can you possibly cook filet on an airplane? I don't know, was not able to figure this out. The filet was incredibly tender with mushrooms, carrots, and roasted tomatoes. The corn souffle was possibly my favorite. It had wonderful flavor. All the yummy drippings and sauces were perfect for dipping the warm baguette into.
The meal ended with a little cake, which was moist and delicious and if you can believe it, a big glass of ice cream with toppings (I chose caramel, he chose chocolate of course).
About two hours before landing we were given a delicious charcuterie plate with fruits, meats, cheeses, crackers, and walnuts. It was perfect for getting us through our layover to the next flight.
The Verdict?: We were more than satisfied with our Copa Airlines experience. The staff was fantastic and friendly, as well as attentive. The seats were very comfortable. The food was as delicious as it gets on an airline. I could have used more movie choices, but overall, Copa really pulled through. Our trip to the Galapagos and mainland Ecuador was as exhausting as they come, and these flights really helped us to relax, especially on the way home!
